You can set up your video cameras to record clips when your system reports an alarm. Here’s how:


How to create an Alarm video recording rule:

  1. Log into the Control portal
  2. Click Video
  3. Click Recording Rules
  4. Click + Add Rule
  5. Click Alarm
  6. Give the new recording rule a name
  7. Using the When an alarm is triggered by drop-down menu, select which sensor alarms you want to trigger a clip recording
  8. In During this time frame, select the time frame you want the rule active
    Note: Choosing At all times will make the rule active all the time, while selecting Only during the following times will allow you to choose specific days and times the rule should be active during
  9. In Record clips from these cameras, click to select which cameras you want to record
  10. In Video Clip Recipients, click + Add Recipients you want notified when something triggers the recording rule
    1. Click the entries in the Address Book you want notified or click + New to add a new Address Book entry
    2. Once you’ve selected all the recipients, click Close
  11. Verify the recording rule is configured with the correct settings
  12. Click Save Rule

 

How can I edit an Alarm video recording rule:

  1. Log into your ADT customer account
  2. Click Video
  3. Click Recording Rules
  4. Click the edit button  for the Any Sensor Alarm recording rule

You can create a rule to record video when someone rings your video doorbell. Here’s how to create a video doorbell call recording rule:

  1. Log into the Control portal
  2. Click Video
  3. Click Recording Rules
  4. Click + Add Rule
  5. Click Doorbell Call Recording Schedule
  6. Give the new recording rule a name
  7. Using the Record a clip when dropdown menu, select which doorbell camera should trigger a clip recording when it’s pushed or called
  8. In Video Clip Recipients, click + Add Recipients to get a notification when someone triggers the recording rule
    1. Click the entries in the Address Book you want notified, or click + New to add a new Address Book entry
    2. Once you’ve selected all desired recipients, click Close

    Important: Notifications are sent to the recipients after the video clip is uploaded to the account.

  9. Verify the recording rule is configured with the correct settings
  10. Click Save Rule

You can create a rule to record video if someone sets off the motion sensor on your video doorbell. Here’s how:

  1. Log into the Control portal
  2. Click Video
  3. Click Recording Rules
  4. Click + Add Rule
  5. Click Doorbell Motion Recording Schedule
  6. Give the new recording rule a name
  7. Using the Record a clip when dropdown menu, select which doorbell camera should trigger a clip recording when motion is detected
  8. In Video Clip Recipients, click + Add Recipients to get a notification when a new clip is uploaded
    1. Click the entries in the Address Book you want notified, or click + New to add a new Address Book entry
    2. Once you’ve selected all desired recipients, click Close

    Important: Notifications are sent to the recipients after the video clip is uploaded to the account.

  9. Verify the recording rule is configured with the correct settings
  10. Click Save Rule

A Sensor Opened/Closed rule lets you record video from a specific camera or other video device when a designated senor opens or closes. Here’s how to set it up:

  1. Log into the Control portal
  2. Click Video
  3. Click Recording Rule
  4. Click + Add Rule
  5. Click Sensor Opened/Closed
  6. Give the new recording rule a name
  7. Using the When...is dropdown menus, select which sensor and status you want to trigger a clip recording
  8. In During this time frame, select the time frame you want the rule active
  9. In Record clips from these cameras, click to select the cameras that should record
  10. In Video Clip Recipients, click + Add Recipients you want notified when the sensor is triggered
    1. Click the entries in the Address Book that you want notified or click + New to add a new Address Book entry
    2. Once you’ve selected all desired recipients, click Close
  11. Verify the recording rule is configured with the correct settings
  12. Click Save Rule

You can create a rule to record video on specific cameras so you can see who armed or disarmed your ADT system. Here’s how:

  1. Log into the Control portal
  2. Click Video
  3. Click Recording Rules
  4. Click + Add Rule
  5. Click System Armed or Disarmed
  6. Give the new recording rule a name
  7. Using the When...is…by dropdown menus, select which system, status and user you want to trigger a recording
  8. In During this time frame, select the time frame you want the rule active
  9. In Record clips from these cameras, click to select the cameras that should record
  10. In Video Clip Recipients, click + Add Recipients you want notified when the sensor is triggered
    1. Click the entries in the Address Book that you want notified, or click + New to add a new Address Book entry
    2. Once you’ve selected all desired recipients, click Close
  11. Verify the recording rule is configured with the correct settings
  12. Click Save Rule

A Video Motion Detection (VMD) recording rule records video when a camera detects motion. For more information about how to configure VMD settings for a video device, click here (see question #8).

  1. Log into the Control portal
  2. Click Video
  3. Click Recording Rules
  4. Click + Add Rule
  5. Click to select Video Motion Detection (VMD)
  6. Give the new recording rule a name
  7. Select which camera you want to record when it detects motion
  8. Click to select any existing VMD windows using the in these VMD windows drop-down menu (if applicable)

    Note: This option is not available for '25, '26, and '36 series cameras. Check your cameras for the model numbers

  9. In During this time frame, select the time frame you want the trigger rule active
  10. In Minimum delay between camera-triggered clip uploads, select the minimum time you want between when the rule can be triggered
  11. If you want, click to select any of the options in the At home settings
    Those options include:
    • Do not record when the system is Disarmed
    • Do not record when the system is Armed Stay
    • Do not record when any of the Geo-Devices are inside Geo-Fence
  12. In Video Clip Recipients, click + Add Recipient to select who you want to receive notifications
    1. Select any entries in the Address Book you want notified or click + New to add a new Address Book entry
    2. Click Close
  13. Verify the recording rule is configured with the desired settings
  14. Click Save Rule

If there’s a delay when someone enters your home, you can create a rule to record video that might help explain the delay. Here’s how to set it up:

  1. Log into the Control portal
  2. Click Video
  3. Click Recording Rules
  4. Click + Add Rule
  5. Click Entry Delay
  6. Give the new recording rule a name
  7. Using the When an entry delay is triggered by dropdown menu, select which entry delay sensors you want to trigger a clip recording
  8. In During this time frame, select the time frame you want the rule active
  9. In Record clips from these cameras, click to select which cameras you want to record clips
  10. In Video Clip Recipients, click + Add Recipients to be notified when the recording rule is triggered
    1. Click the entries in the Address Book you want notified or click + New to add a new Address Book entry
    2. Once you’ve selected all the recipients, click Close
  11. Verify the recording rule is configured with the correct settings
  12. Click Save Rule

You can pause recording rules so they stop recording clips, and then un-pause them to start recording again. You can do this through both your online account and the ADT Control app.

Important: If a recording rule paused because the account reached its clip upload limit, you can’t re-enable the rule until the end of the current month. For more information about how the upload limit and online storage work, click here (see questions #13-15).

To pause or resume a video recording rule using the app:

  1. Log into the ADT Control app
  2. Tap the Menu button 
  3. Tap Video
  4. Tap the Settings button 
  5. Tap Recording Rules
  6. Tap the toggle switch for the recording rule you want to pause or reactivate
    Note: If a recording rule reverts back to paused after you enable it, make sure your account hasn’t reached its upload limit.
    • If the switch is grey, the recording rule is paused 
    • If the switch is blue, the recording rule is active

You can delete any or all recording rules through your online ADT account.


Caution: Deleting a local recording rule that records to a Stream Video Recorder (SVR) will also delete the associated footage for that video device from the SVR.


To delete a video recording rule using the website:

  1. Log into the Control portal
  2. Click Video
  3. Click Recording Rules
  4. Click  on the recording rule you want to delete
  5. On the Delete Rule pop up window, click Yes
